What weather do New River Valley gutters face?

Blacksburg gets about 42.6 inches of precipitation in a typical year, spread over roughly 136 days. What sets the area apart from the rest of Virginia is the cold. At about 2,080 feet in Blacksburg and 2,133 feet in Christiansburg, the towns average around 24.7 inches of snow a season, mostly between December and March, and the record low in Blacksburg is 27 degrees below zero. Summers are mild for Virginia, with only about five days a year at 90 degrees or above, but thunderstorms still bring short, heavy bursts of rain that overwhelm small or clogged gutters.

Why does snow matter so much?

Snow sliding off a roof can bend gutters and rip out hangers, and a gutter packed with leaves holds water that freezes in place. Repeated freezing and thawing also cracks sealant at the corners. Clearing gutters before the first hard freeze, using hidden hangers spaced closely, and choosing a guard that's fastened well enough to carry snow all help.

What size gutters should a house here have?

Five-inch K-style gutters with 2-by-3-inch downspouts are the most common setup. Six-inch gutters with 3-by-4-inch downspouts carry much more water and suit large or steep roof planes, long runs and corners fed by valleys. The right size depends on how much roof drains into each gutter, how steep it is and how hard it rains. Gutters that overflow even when clean are often undersized or short on downspouts.

What license does a gutter installer need in Virginia?

Virginia's contractor law, administered by DPOR's Board for Contractors, sorts licenses by job size. A Class C license covers single jobs worth more than $1,000 but less than $30,000, with total jobs under $250,000 in a 12-month period. Class B covers single jobs from $30,000 up to $150,000, and Class A covers $150,000 and above. Ask which class the company holds, make sure the license number appears on the contract, and look it up on DPOR's License Lookup before you sign.

Who issues building permits?

Montgomery County's economic development office explains that the Towns of Blacksburg and Christiansburg issue construction permits and do building inspections inside their own limits, while the county handles the unincorporated areas such as Shawsville, Riner and Prices Fork. Radford is an independent city with its own government. Virginia's Uniform Statewide Building Code doesn't name gutters in its list of exempt work, but it does exempt work the building official considers minor and ordinary. The same section lets the building official require permits for siding, roofing and window replacement in historic districts and for normally exempt work in a special flood hazard area. When in doubt, call the office that covers your address.

What about the Blacksburg Historic District?

Blacksburg has one designated historic district, and the town's Historic or Design Review Board reviews proposed alterations, new construction and demolition there. Some reviews are handled by staff and others go to the full board, depending on the project. If your home is in the district, contact the town's Planning and Building Department before changing the style or material of your gutters.

How do I protect myself when hiring?

  • Check the license on DPOR's website and get the number on the contract.
  • Ask for a certificate of liability insurance.
  • Get a written contract naming the gutter size, guard product, downspout count, warranty and payment schedule.
  • Keep the down payment near 10 percent, as the Board for Contractors suggests.
  • If you signed during a home solicitation, Virginia law generally lets you cancel until midnight of the third business day.
  • If a licensed contractor doesn't perform, ask DPOR about the Virginia Contractor Transaction Recovery Fund.
